Village Tour
After your tasty and enjoyable lunch, it's time to burn some
calories. You'll have a guided walking tour around the village of St. Cuthbert’s Mission—also known by its indigenous name Pakuri.
Pakuri is a prominent Amerindian community of the Lokono
(Arawak) people situated along the Mahaica River in Region 4 of Guyana. Founded
in the late 19th century by Joseph Ferguson
and originally named for the abundant Pakuri trees, it was rechristened “St. Cuthbert’s Mission” in 1889 following the arrival of
Anglican missionaries on St. Cuthbert’s Day.
Home to roughly 1,700–2,000 residents across about 200
households, the village spans a lush riverside savannah bordered by dense
rainforest.
8)
2:30 PM
Swimming & Canoeing
Your village walking tour will bring you to the St.
Cuthberts waterfront where the Mahaica River runs. This river connects
different parts of the village and also works as an access point for the
village.
The lovely black water is popular for swimming in Guyana.
The water gets its color from the natural tannins released from decaying
vegetation, such as leaves, bark, and roots in surrounding forests and swamps.
Canoeing depends on the availability on the indigenous
individuals and their canoes since we use the traditional indigenous dugout
canoe.
